About Lights Out (Formally
TCU
Late Night with Michael Numberman)
What is Lights Out? It is the name of
television show which was all student produced, and aired nationally
to 42 states.
It all started when two college students
decided to do a mock take off of Late Night with David Letterman.
Mike Austin and John Ryan were sitting in their dorm room viewing
some home video tapes which consisted of Mike playing the role in a
David Letterman type interview. They decided since they were
Radio/Television/Film students, that they wanted to persue their
dream of doing their own show. The dream became a reality one day
when Mike and John were having pizza with two of their friends Andy
Swift and Khris Kesling.
Paul Waffer and his band durring the first
show.
Preparations were made. First we needed a
name for the show. We all decided on
TCU Late
Night with Michael Numberman. This was because we were all students
attending Texas Christian
University, and we used the name
Numberman, because it was like Letterman. The next thing we needed
was a sidekick. We found a student named Scott Kuehn, that was also
in Radio/TV/Film who resembled Paul Shaffer. We called him Paul
Waffer. We had to recruit a band, some writers, and some technicians.
We also had to make sure that we were able to use the Radio/TV/Film
Studio to do our show. After we recruited everyone, it was time to do
a show.
Mike Numberman's first
appearance
It was about 7:00pm on Friday April 15,
1988, when Mike walked out infront of an audience of about 20
students and said "Hi, welcome to
TCU Late
Night!".
